Campus Community says it loud and proud: “We are McGill”

Campus Community Campaign launched

On May 4, faculty and staff members turned out in force for events on both campuses to celebrate their collective contributions to McGill and officially launch the Campus Community Campaign.

More than 350 McGillians took a break from their work responsibilities to join the late-afternoon celebration, which offered the chance to mingle with colleagues while enjoying wine, hors d’oeuvres and live music courtesy from some of their fellow faculty and staff members.

Robyn Wiltshire, one of the Campus Community Committee Co-Chairs outlined the program to follow, and introduced Professor Morty Yalovsky, another Campus Community Co-Chair, who spoke about the campain. He was followed up by Co-Chair Ivan Neilson, who described some of the important fundraising efforts undertaken by McGill students. Principal Heather Munroe-Blum and Senator Michael Meighen, a Campaign McGill Co-Chair, were also in attendance to express their appreciation for the hard work of McGill faculty and staff members.

“This initiative is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the community – to everyone who works so hard for McGill,” Wiltshire says. “Clearly, the Campus Community events have been a terrific success so far, and a great way for faculty and staff to get together, kick back, and celebrate.”

Not to be outdone, Macdonald Campus hosted their own celebration, which was emceed by Campus Community Co-Chair Peter Knox. “We need to feel what we do is important and part of something greater, and then celebrate that with others,” he says.

Photo Contest winners announced

The University-wide celebration also served as an opportunity to announce the winner and two runners-up for the Campus Community Photo Contest, which drew more than 100 entries.

The winner, who received a $300 gift certificate to the McGill Faculty Club, was Geraldine Dorothee Delbes from the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics for her photo “Spring Lab Coat Fashion”.

Darryl Halickman, an Assistant Project Manager from Faculities and Operation and Development, was the first runner-up with his photo “Project Management Team in MCGill Hardhats and Safety Boots”. The second runner-up, from the Schulich of Music, was Professor Gordon Foote with his photo “The Happiness Blues”.

Just the beginning

The Campus Community Campaign Launch caps a year of sold-out events – ranging from breakfasts and lunch and learns to a magic of chemistry demonstration by Ariel Fenster and a Valentine’s Day Dance at Macdonald Campus.

This is just the beginning, however. The Campus Community Committee hopes to offer more exciting events in the coming months that they hope will continue to build camaraderie across the University.

“We encourage all faculty, staff, students and retirees to show their McGill pride by participating in Campus Community events, activities and initiatives,” Prof. Yalovsky says. “Your involvement and support is absolutely essential to ensuring McGill’s continuing success.”
