It may be summertime, when the textbooks and study notes are packed away, but it doesn’t mean learning necessarily takes a break.
In fact, some McGill students are continuing their education through the Faculty of Arts Internships program – 83 lucky students, to be exact. This summer’s group of Internship Awards winners are going to gain valuable work experience in their fields of study by living and working around the world, from Guadalajara to Geneva, to Phnom Penh and Nairobi.
But as I was browsing the list to see what cool things they would be accomplishing this summer, I realized that some students were staying here in Montreal to intern. The natural tendency when you hear “internship” is to think international (travel vaccinations, visas and booking plane tickets), but many great opportunities exist here in our very own city.
One student will be working with an organization in Montreal, The Climate Project Canada, which spreads awareness about climate change through its volunteer initiatives. (It may sound familiar if you’ve seen the documentary An Inconvenient Truth with Al Gore.) It’s a valuable experience to intern as part of a global movement at a time when you see stories on the news about extreme weather conditions – like this year’s floods in the Richelieu Valley, happening right in our own backyard.
When I was a university student, I wish I had taken advantage of a great program like the one the Arts Internship Office offers. Not only is it a life-changing experience, but these students will leave McGill with a degree and valuable work experience that will help them when they enter the competitive job market.
Also, these students are trying to make the world a better place, and thanks to this opportunity, they will leave a lasting legacy in the communities they intern with – whether near or far.
