On Feb. 21, Zack Lober, BMus’00, will premiere The Ancestry Project, a musical and visual production inspired by the life of his grandfather, at Montreal’s Segal Centre.
Lober, a New York City-based jazz bassist and composer, is the grandson of Hyman Herman, a seminal figure in Montreal’s Jewish music community. Lober sought to chronicle his family’s personal and musical history, and in 2010 began a series of interviews with the Polish-born Herman, whose own father was also a musician. Lober then crafted an hour-long suite of music informed by the narrative that emerged from those conversations.
Another McGill graduate, saxophonist Chet Doxas, BMus’04, MMus’08, will also take part in the production.
