Manuel Antonio Reserve is listed as one of the top 1,000 places to see before you die. I can certainly attest to that and now can cross it off my list of things to do. This beautiful sanctuary, just outside the town of Quepos is home to monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, hundreds of different types of birds, and my favourite – the sloth. And the beaches are really nice too.

The longest known mammal migration is that of the humpback whale, who travels annually 11,000 km from the Antarctic to Costa Rica. They don’t come for the zip lining or the beautiful beaches, but rather for the warm waters surrounding the country. It is in these warm, crystal clear waters that the females give birth and nurture their babies before returning to the feeding grounds of the Antarctic. And it is here, in these waters, that I had the privilege of watching a female humpback whale and her baby for nearly an hour one morning.
